Tapapa Marae

Ground was broken in phase 1 on the Tapapa Marae Project outside Tirau in March 2020 and the final phase (Wharekai) was completed in September 2023

The three-phase project involved the establishment of a Whare Horoi and Wharekai. The use of the rammed earth technique which constructs structural walls using natural raw materials, took place over the winter of 2020 and utilised 300m2 of rammed earth. The publicly funded project involved members of the Tapapa Marae Trust who found learning the skills incredibly rewarding. The Marae uses a combination of modern technology with traditional building methods to create a beautiful and functional large space with smaller rooms radiating from it.
